Per the US Department of Defense, there were a total of 498,333 deaths from the Civil War:

	140,415 battlefield deaths of Union forces
	74,524 battlefield deaths of Confederate forces
	224,097 other deaths of Union forces
	59,297 other deaths of Confederate forces

Per the US Census Bureau, there were a total of 490,000 black slaves in the US at the start of the war.

One White American died for each black slave who was freed.
